What does a pulsed dye laser do?

How does a pulsed dye laser work?

The laser delivers an intense but gentle burst of yellow light to the skin. The light is absorbed by the blood vessels in the dermis and coagulates them so that the body reabsorbs them during the natural healing process.

Is the treatment safe?

Pulsed dye laser treatment is so safe that it has been used successfully to treat port wine stains in infants and young children. The Candela unique dynamic cooling method, DCD™ protects the epidermis during treatment by spraying a cooling mist onto the skin before each laser pulse, increasing the patient's comfort.

Side effects may include purpura (a laser bruise), redness, and swelling in the treated area. These usually do not last more than a few days. Permanent side effects such as scarring are rare.

What will the treatment be like?

You wear safety eyewear to protect your eyes from laser light during these skin care treatments. The physician applies a small hand piece to the treatment area to deliver the laser energy. You feel a spray of cooling mist before each laser pulse.

Is the treatment painful?

You may feel a slight discomfort associated with the laser pulse – a feeling similar to the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. The Candela Dynamic Cooling Device™ minimizes this discomfort. In some cases, a topical anesthetic is used prior to these skin care treatments. Discuss this option with your physician.

What precautions should I take before and after pulsed dye laser treatment?

Avoid sun exposure before, throughout, and after the course of the skin care treatments. Use a sunblock (SPF 30 or above). The post-treatment care needed depends on what lesion was treated. Discuss after-care needs with your physician before treatment.
