FAQs on Acne Treatment:

What is acne, really?

Most people will experience acne at some point in life, but did you know that acne is an inflammatory disease? Acne affects sweat glands on your skin known as sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are most numerous on the face, chest, and back, which is why most acne outbreaks are found on these parts of your body.

What are the causes of acne?

Acne has a number of common causes, including:

  • Genetics
  • Hormonal shifts, especially during your period or when elevated by puberty and stress
  • Oil-based cosmetics such as Noxzema, cocoa butter, or mineral oil
  • Frequent exercise

Some more uncommon causes of acne include foods and beverages (like dairy products, caffeine, citrus fruits, and foods containing iodine) and an excess of bacteria.

What is the most effective acne treatment?

The best skincare for acne includes topical drying agents such as benzoyl peroxides and vitamin A acid (Retin-A) to keep the skin dry, get rid of blackheads, and help cysts heal more quickly. Additionally, Dr. Frankel and the team at RI Skin Doc can provide treatments such as:

  • Oral antibiotics. These have anti-inflammatory properties that can prevent the formation of new cysts, but they are not curative and work only as long as you take them.
  • Oral or injected cortisone or prednisone to get rid of redness and swollen cysts. Their anti-inflammatory properties are rapid and effective, but short-term (1 to 4 weeks).
  • Cryo-spraying of cysts with liquid nitrogen to decrease inflammation and speed healing.
  • Isotretinoin, an oral medication reserved for the most severe and long-lasting cases of acne.
  • Incision and drainage of cysts.

We’re also proud to offer Blue Light and Smooth Beam laser treatments for acne, which target overactive sebaceous glands. If you’d like more information on these procedures, give us a call - the skin care experts at RI Skin Doc are happy to help!
